Kaltura Capture Download For Mac

Step 1: Install Kaltura Capture

Choose Kaltura Capture from the Launch Application window, check the box to remember your default, and click the Open link button. Option 2: Installing for Mac. We recommend using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to download your Kaltura media. Under My Media, select Edit for the video or audio recording you would like to download. In the Downloads tab, check the boxes next to the formats you wish to have available for download (depending on the original file's format, not all will be available).

Go to mediaspace.umn.edu and click +ADD NEW in the upper right. Select Launch Kaltura Capture (Mac/Win)

Then choose Download for Windows or Download for Mac, depending on what operating system you have, and follow the prompts to install the application onto your computer.

Step 2: Record your Screen with Kaltura Capture

Start Kaltura Capture. It can be found in Start or in your Application folder.

Once the program Select the camera, screen, and audio sources for your video by clicking the drop-down menus under each icon. You can also toggle each of these off entirely by clicking on the icon. Click the red record button to start recording.

Pull up your presentation and present it full screen, narrating into the microphone you selected. When you're done, click the square Stop Recording button.

Give your recording a Title and click Save & Upload.

Step 3: Share the Recording in your Canvas Course

You can now add this recording to your Canvas course, anywhere you find the text editor that looks like this (Announcements, Pages, Discussions, Assignments, etc)

For this example, we'll share the video in an Announcement. Go to your Canvas course and click the Announcements link in the left navigation.

Click + Announcement.

In the body of the announcement, place your cursor where you want the video to appear and then click on the Kaltura icon in the text box tool bar.

Find the video you want to share and click </> Embed.

When complete, click Save to submit and save your Announcement.

Kaltura Capture (or Kaltura Personal Capture) is a desktop application that allows computer screen recording and video recording via a webcam. It is an easy to use application and is available for both PC and Mac. Video recorded on Kaltura Capture can be shared with others on Canvas.net LMS.

Throughout the online academic journey, some online courses may require completion of video presentation projects, and the best tool available is Kaltura Capture. This guide introduces the features of Kaltura Capture application, and the process of webcam recording and computer screen recording.

Kaltura Capture, Kaltura Personal Capture, and the Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder are all the same application. For the purpose of this guide, the application will be referred to as Kaltura Capture.

Download & Install

Kaltura Capture is not a free desktop application, but for University of Wisconsin students, this application is available on Canvas.net LMS for free.

Do not click the Record/Upload Media button.
This is not the button to record or upload video for Kaltura Capture.

To download Kaltura Capture application:

  1. Sign into an online course and go to any page that has a Canvas Editor
  2. Click the More External Tools button (the blue down arrow)
  3. Click My Media on the dropdown menu
  1. Click the + Add New button on popup modal window
  2. Click Kaltura Capture on the dropdown menu
  1. Click the checkbox to agree to the terms and conditions.

Kaltura Capture

  1. For Windows (PC), click the Download for Windows link.
    For Mac (Apple), click the Download for Mac link.
  2. Follow the Kaltura Capture installer prompts to complete the installation.
  3. Open the Kaltura Capture application after the installation is completed.

The Kalture Capture user interface should look like the image above.

Pre-recording Window

  1. Start Recording button - click this button to start recording.
  2. Turn webcam on/off button - click this button to turn webcam on or off.
  3. Webcam preview/input button - click this button to see a preview of what the webcam is recording and choose the webcam input source.
  4. Turn screen on/off button - click this button to see to turn screen recording on or off.
  5. Screen preview/input button - click this button to see a preview of the screen that will be recorded and choose screen input source and recording area.
  6. Turn microphone on/off button - click this button to turn the microphone on or off.
  7. Microphone input button - click this button to change the input source of the microphone.
  8. Manage link - click this link to open the Kaltura Capture library. The library contains all of the recordings and settings.

Library Window

  1. New Recording button - click this button to start a new recording.
  2. Library tab - display a list of all recordings.
  3. Settings tab - display settings for recording quality, naming, etc.

Recording Window

  1. Stop Recording button - click this button to stop the recording. A popup dialog will prompts for confirmation.
    Click the No button to resume recording.
    Click the Yes, Stop it button to stop recording and open post-recording window.
  2. Pause/Resume Recording button - click this button to pause or resume recording.
  3. Cancel Recording button - click this button to cancel and discard recording.
  4. Current recording elapsed time.
  5. Microphone level indicator. If grayed out, microphone is disabled/unavailable.
  6. Tools panel - click to open a panel of screen editing tools, such as drawing, selecting, adding text, etc. Tools are available only for screen recording. This is an experimental feature and may not work as intended.

Save & Upload (Post-Recording) Window

  1. Recording Preview - a preview of the recording.
  2. Title field - required; enter or change the title of the recording.
  3. Description field - optional; describe the context of the recording.
  4. Tags field - optional; enter any keywords for the recording.
  5. Delete button - click this button to delete the recording.
  6. Save & Upload button - click this button to save the recording and upload the recording to Kaltura for sharing.
  7. Save button - click this button to save the recording locally. The recording will not be uploaded and cannot be shared. The option to upload is still available.

Once the recording is saved and/or uploaded, it will be listed in the Kaltura Capture library. If the video is uploaded, it will be available on online course for sharing.

Webcam Recording

To start a PowerPoint recording:

  1. Open the PowerPoint presentation that needs to be recorded

When recording a PowerPoint presentation, webcam is optional. However, it is recommended to turn on the webcam recording for viewers to know who is presenting.

  1. Click the Webcam preview/input button to make sure the webcam is active. Change the input of the webcam if necessary. If the Webcam button is grayed out, webcam is disabled or not available.

Screen recording must be enabled for PowerPoint presentation, and the PowerPoint must be on the screen that is being recorded.

Kaltura does not recommend recording a video playback on a screen or inside a PowerPoint presentation. Computer sounds or audio will not be recorded.

  1. Click the Screen preview/input button to make sure the screen is active. For multiple displays/monitors, change the display of the screen if necessary. Select the options of recording full screen or only a selected area if necessary.
  1. Click the Audio preview/input button to make sure the microphone is active. Change the input of the microphone if necessary. If the Audio button is grayed out, microphone is disabled or not available.
  2. Click the Start Recording (big red) button to start recording.

If this is the first time recording a PowerPoint presentation, Kaltura Capture will ask for permission to access the PowerPoint. Click Yes, OK, Accept, etc. to allow access.

  1. Click the Slide Show button on the PowerPoint to enter the slide show mode. You can also enter slide show mode before clicking the Start Recording button on the Kaltura Capture.
  1. Click the Stop Recording (gray square) button to stop the recording. A popup dialog will prompts for confirmation.
    Click the Yes, Stop it button to stop recording and open the post-recording window.
  1. Enter a title for the recording in the Title field.
  2. Click the Save & Upload button to save and upload the video to Kaltura.

Once the recording is saved and uploaded, it will be displayed in the library. For instructions on sharing or posting the recording on online course, please refer to the Share/Post Recording section. For instructions on how to edit the recording, please refer to the Edit Recording section.

Follow the steps below to upload video that is not recorded with the Kaltura Capture.

Do not click the Record/Upload Media button.
This is not the button to record or upload video for Kaltura Capture.

To upload a video:

  1. Sign into an online course and go to any page that has a Canvas Editor
  2. Click the More External Tools button (the blue down arrow)
  3. Click My Media on the dropdown menu
  1. Click the + Add New button on popup modal window
  2. Click Media Upload on the dropdown menu
Kaltura
  1. Click the checkbox to agree to the terms and conditions.

Although drag and dropping file is available, it is not recommended. There are known issues, such as not responding, not recognizing file, displaying an error message, etc.

  1. Click the + Choose a file to upload button to upload a file.
  2. Follows the Windows Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac) dialog to locate and select the file.
  1. While the video is uploading, fill in the required fields.
  1. Click the Save or </> Save and Embed button to save the info entered in the fields once the video completed uploading.
    • The Save button will just save the info entered in the field and does not embed the video onto the Canvas Editor. The My Media modal will not close automatically.
    • The </> Save and Embed button will save the info entered in the field and embed the video into the Canvas Editor once the video completed uploading. The My Media modal will close automatically.

Once completed, the uploaded video should be listed on the My Media modal and on the Kaltura Capture library.

This guide does not thoroughly explain/demonstrate the Video Editor. Please visit Kaltura Learning channel for video editing (and many other related) tutorials.

To edit an existing recording details:

  1. Open the Kaltura Capture application
  2. Click the Manage link to go to the library
  1. Click the link of the recording that needs editing.

The link will open and display on the computer's default web browser.

  1. Click the ACTIONS button.
  2. Click the Edit button on the dropdown menu to go to the recording editor.

Details about the recording and additional settings can be edited on this page.

  1. Click the Save button when finished.

To edit the recording itself:

  1. Click the Launch Editor button right next to video preview. You can also click the Launch Editor button on the ACTIONS dropdown menu.

Follow the steps below to share/post recording on Canvas LMS to fellow enrolled students and instructor in the current course.

Do not click the Record/Upload Media button.
This is not the button to record or upload video for Kaltura Capture.

To share/post a video:

  1. Sign into an online course and go to any page that has a Canvas Editor
  2. Click the More External Tools button (the blue down arrow)
  3. Click My Media on the dropdown menu

All media (if any) will be listed in the My Media modal.

  1. Click the Select button next to the recording that is to be shared. The recording will be embedded to the Canvas Editor, and the My Media modal will close automatically.

By default, the recording will be embedded onto the Canvas Editor at a medium size. To change the size of the embed, click the down arrow next on the Select button. A dropdown menu will display three choices, which are cut off. The three choices are large, medium, and small. Select the desired size, and it will be embedded onto the Canvas Editor.

Do not share the link from the Kaltura Capture library.

This is a private link. All recordings uploaded to Kaltura are private by default. Once the video is shared or posted on Canvas LMS, it becomes public to the enrolled students and instructor(s) of a course.
